1
Campaign Objectives & Structure

Expert Level

Meta's campaign structure has three levels: Campaign → Ad Set → Ad. Choosing the right objective at the Campaign level is the single most important decision you'll make — it determines how Meta's algorithm finds and charges for audiences.

Campaign Objectives (ODAX Framework)

ObjectiveUse WhenBillingBest For
Sales / ConversionsYou have Pixel tracking purchasesPer impression (CPM)E-commerce, D2C brands
TrafficDriving clicks to website / AmazonPer click (CPC) or CPMExternal Amazon traffic
Awareness / ReachBrand building, new marketPer 1,000 impressionsNew product launches
EngagementPost likes, page followersPer engagementSocial proof building
Lead GenerationCollecting email / phone without websitePer lead form openB2B, service businesses
Pro Tip

Always use Sales / Conversions objective for e-commerce — even if you want traffic. Meta will optimise for people most likely to purchase, not just click. Use Traffic objective only when sending to Amazon where you can't place Pixel events.

Recommended Campaign Architecture for Indian Sellers

  • TOF (Top of Funnel): 1-2 Awareness/Reach campaigns — broad audiences, video content, India-wide
  • MOF (Middle of Funnel): 1-2 Traffic campaigns — website visitors, video viewers 50%+
  • BOF (Bottom of Funnel): 2-3 Conversion campaigns — cart abandoners, purchasers lookalike, email list
  • Retargeting: 1 dedicated Conversion campaign — website visitors last 7d, cart abandoners

2
Audience Targeting

Advanced

Meta has 3 audience types. Use all three in a layered strategy for maximum efficiency.

Core Audiences (Saved Audiences)

Core audiences are built using demographics, interests, and behaviours. For Indian sports equipment sellers, the proven targeting stack is:

  • Location: India (all) or Tier 1+2 cities (Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Pune, Hyderabad)
  • Age: 22-45 for sports gear, 25-40 for premium equipment
  • Interests: Sports & Fitness, Badminton, Cricket, Yoga, Running, Fitness Equipment
  • Behaviours: Engaged Shoppers + Online Buyers (this is critical)
Common Mistake

Don't over-narrow your audience. Meta needs at least 2-5 million potential reach to optimise effectively. An audience under 500K restricts the algorithm and raises CPMs. When in doubt, go broader and let Advantage+ optimise.

Custom Audiences

  • Website Visitors (30d, 60d, 180d): Requires Pixel. Your highest-intent audience.
  • Customer List Upload: Upload phone/email CSV. Match rate in India is typically 40-60%.
  • Video Viewers (25%, 50%, 75%): Great for retargeting people who watched your ads.
  • Instagram / Page Engagers: People who liked, commented, or saved your posts — last 365 days.
  • Cart Abandoners: Pixel event InitiateCheckout but not Purchase — highest ROAS segment.

Lookalike Audiences (LAL)

Lookalike audiences find people who are statistically similar to your source audience. For India, 1% LAL is the sweet spot (~2-5 million reach). Key source audiences:

  • Purchasers LAL 1% — best performing for e-commerce
  • High-value purchasers LAL 1% (top 25% by order value)
  • Website visitors 180d LAL 1%
  • Instagram engagers LAL 1%
Best Practice

You need at least 100 people in your source audience to create a Lookalike. For best results, aim for 500-1,000+ purchasers. With only 428 purchasers today, your LAL 1% is already viable — start now.

3
Creative Strategy & Testing

Advanced

Creatives are the #1 lever for Meta ad performance. In 2025-26, video content outperforms static images by 2-3x on CPM and CTR.

Creative Formats — Performance Ranking (India E-commerce)

FormatAvg CTRAvg CPMBest Placement
Reels / Short Video (9:16)3.8%₹80-120Instagram Reels, FB Reels
Video (1:1 or 4:5)3.2%₹100-150Feed, Stories
Carousel (1:1)2.8%₹120-160Feed, Marketplace
Single Image (1:1)2.1%₹140-200Feed, Right Column
Collection / Instant Exp.2.4%₹130-180Mobile Feed

Testing Framework (A/B Testing)

  • Test 3-5 creatives per ad set. Let them run for at least 7 days or 50 link clicks each before killing underperformers.
  • Test one variable at a time: hook (first 3 seconds), headline, CTA, or visual style.
  • Use Dynamic Creative Optimisation (DCO): Upload 5 images, 5 headlines, 3 descriptions — Meta tests all combinations automatically.
  • Winning creative rule: ROAS > 3x for 7 days? Scale the budget. CTR < 1%? Kill it.
Hook Formula (First 3 Seconds)

The first 3 seconds determine if someone stops scrolling. Proven hooks: "Did you know..." + surprising fact | Problem statement ("Still losing at badminton?") | Unboxing / product reveal | Before & after (avoid for regulated categories).

4
Meta Pixel & Conversions API

Advanced

The Meta Pixel is a JavaScript snippet that tracks user behaviour on your website. Since iOS 14 (2021), browser-based tracking alone loses 30-50% of events. The solution is Conversions API (CAPI) — server-side tracking that bypasses browser restrictions.

Pixel Setup (Add to every page)

// Paste in <head> of every page
<script>
!function(f,b,e,v,n,t,s){
  if(f.fbq)return;n=f.fbq=function(){
    n.callMethod ? n.callMethod.apply(n,arguments) : n.queue.push(arguments)
  };
  fbq('init', 'YOUR_PIXEL_ID');
  fbq('track', 'PageView');
}(window, document, ...);
</script>

Standard Events to Fire

EventWhen to FireImpact on ROAS
PageViewEvery page loadBaseline tracking
ViewContentProduct page viewedMedium
AddToCartItem added to cartHigh — enables cart retargeting
InitiateCheckoutCheckout page openedHigh — highest intent segment
PurchaseOrder confirmedCritical — the core conversion event
iOS 14 Impact

After Apple's App Tracking Transparency (ATT) update, Meta can lose up to 50% of conversion signals from iOS users. Fix this by implementing Conversions API (CAPI) on your server to send Purchase events directly to Meta — bypassing browser restrictions entirely.

5
Bidding & Budget Optimisation

Expert

Choosing the right bid strategy is critical. The wrong strategy wastes budget; the right one multiplies ROAS.

StrategyHow It WorksUse WhenRisk
Lowest CostMeta spends full budget at lowest available costNew campaigns, testing phaseNo cost control — can overspend per conversion
Cost CapTargets average CPA ≤ your capKnown CPA target, scalingUnderspend if cap is too tight
Bid CapHard ceiling on bid per auctionVery competitive auctionsLow delivery — not recommended for starters
Target ROASOptimises to hit revenue-per-spend targetProven campaigns with 500+ conversions/monthUnderspend if ROAS target unrealistic
Highest ValueFinds highest purchase value buyersPremium products, high AOVHigher CPMs

CBO vs ABO

  • Campaign Budget Optimisation (CBO): Set budget at campaign level. Meta distributes across ad sets automatically. Best for scaling proven ad sets.
  • Ad Set Budget Optimisation (ABO): Set budget per ad set. More control. Best for testing new audiences where you want equal spend across variants.
Scaling Rule of Thumb

Scale winning campaigns by no more than 20% every 3 days. Larger jumps reset the learning phase. Use "Duplicate & Scale" at 1.5-2x budget for aggressive scaling — the duplicate enters learning fresh without disrupting the original.

6
Retargeting Funnel Strategy

Advanced

The retargeting funnel targets people who have already interacted with your brand. These audiences convert at 3-8x higher rates than cold audiences.

3-Layer Funnel for E-commerce

  • 🔝 TOFU — Awareness: Video viewers (50%+), Instagram post engagers, page likes. Show brand story, product range, testimonials. Budget: 20-30% of total.
  • 📊 MOFU — Consideration: Website visitors 30-180d, video viewers 75%+. Show product demos, comparison content, reviews. Budget: 30-40%.
  • 🎯 BOFU — Conversion: Cart abandoners, checkout starters, past purchasers (upsell/cross-sell). Show urgency creatives, discount offers, free shipping. Budget: 30-40%.
Frequency Caps

Set frequency caps for retargeting ad sets. Recommended: 3-5 impressions per person per week for BOFU. Above 6 frequency, CTR typically drops by 40%+ (audience fatigue). Refresh creatives every 2-3 weeks for retargeting audiences.

7
Analytics & Attribution

Advanced

Attribution is how Meta decides which ad gets credit for a conversion. Understanding attribution windows prevents over- or under-reporting your ROAS.

Attribution Windows

WindowWhat It TracksRecommended
7-day click + 1-day viewConversions within 7 days of click OR 1 day of seeing the ad✓ Default — use this
7-day click onlyOnly credits ad if person clickedMore conservative / accurate
1-day click + 1-day viewShort window — less credit inflationFor impulse-purchase products
28-day click (Legacy)Long window — inflates reported ROAS✗ Avoid

Reconciling Meta ROAS vs. Backend Orders

Meta Ads Manager often reports 20-40% more revenue than your actual backend orders due to view-through attribution and multi-touch overlap. Always compare:

  • Meta Ads Manager purchase revenue (7d click, 1d view)
  • SellerBoost backend orders attributed to Meta (via UTM: utm_source=meta&utm_medium=paid)
  • The "true ROAS" is typically 70-80% of what Meta reports

8
Advantage+ & Meta AI Features

Intermediate

Meta's AI-powered Advantage+ features automate audience finding, bid optimisation, and creative selection. They work best when given broad inputs and sufficient conversion data.

Advantage+ Shopping Campaigns (ASC)

  • Replaces manual Prospecting + Retargeting campaigns with a single AI-driven campaign
  • Meta automatically splits budget between new customers and retargeting
  • Best results when you have 50+ monthly purchases and have fed the pixel for 90+ days
  • Provide 10-20 high-quality creatives (mix of video, image, carousel) and let the algorithm test
  • Set a "New Customer Budget Cap" to control how much goes to prospecting vs retargeting
When to Use ASC vs Manual

Use Advantage+ Shopping when you have a proven product with 50+ monthly purchases. Use manual campaigns for new product launches, testing new audiences, or when you need tight cost control (cost cap bidding).

9
Ad Policy & Compliance

Expert

Violating Meta ad policies results in ad rejection, account restriction, or permanent ban. Every SellerBoost user must understand the core policies.

Common Policy Violations to Avoid

  • Before & After Images: Prohibited for health, fitness, and beauty products. No body transformation images.
  • Exaggerated Claims: "Guaranteed results", "Best in the world", "100% effective" — all prohibited.
  • Excessive Image Text: Text should cover <20% of the image. Use Meta's text overlay checker.
  • Misleading CTAs: Button says "Download" but landing page is a purchase form — rejected.
  • Sensitive Categories: Fitness supplements, health claims, financial products — require Special Ad Category designation.
Account Health

Keep your Ad Account Quality Score above 2 (out of 3) to avoid restrictions. Repeated rejected ads lower your quality score. When an ad is rejected, appeal through Meta Business Support — most rejections are automated and incorrect. Never create a new ad account to bypass restrictions — it's against Meta's Terms of Service.
